No I don’t think so, the purple and flury of other colours in the 3rd pannel might just be a distortion of colours from the background.
Als the purple seems to be a universal “aura” of spectral energy. At least for the dark coloured ones.
For this page specifically it’s just like a way to show the connection with his spirit’s back but in the past I just did that because it looks cool. Or to provide contrast, like in chapter 2, where straight black energy wouldn’t be visible with the background.
Best!
Max has just taken his first real step towards becoming a superh- villain? Still, I can see Johnny being somehow remarkably unfazed by his classmate transforming into Magneto.
That is to say, unfazed AFTER the initial “Where’d the what WHAT.” phase. He seems to just sort of tank his way through the boundary walls of rational behavior.
Also want to say that the coloring on this lage is really cool and dynamic!
I’m not Zack, but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say yes. But Max has to ride it like a witch’s broomstick while doing so. Alternately, he could always do what Thor does, but I don’t think his body is tough enough to survive re-entry.
Stealing change from Johnny… his first step into villainy.
Or maybe not, it was probably justified anyway. Probably some poor kid’s pocket change. *shrug*
Just wanted to say I appreciate the effort you put into this enterprise oh great author, before I say anything else. It is a pleasure to read this comic every Friday.
As for the pocket change, He beat a paper dollar not quarters out of Max yesterday in the story, so my guess is it may not be Johnny’s money. The rusty nail, however… I wouldn’t bet against it being Johnny’s.
Max’s spectral energy looks really pretty this way! It probably takes longer, but it’d be amazing if you did it like this in the more serious pages. Or.. as serious as paranatural can be, anyways.
I have a question. If Max’s power has to do with magnetism or just plain metal control, will he be able to make a metal object hit a spirit/ghost? I understand Isabel’s paper and Ed’s pant affecting spirits/ghosts since they originate from their respective tools, but Max’s control metal in the enviroment, things that normally should just go through spirits/ghosts.
Oh… now I’m thinking about situations where the spectral kids would have to fight each other! Not entirely sure how that would come about, but given what happens to most series like this, it’s a distinct possibility.
Given possibility? In series like this (that is, ones where people with powers associate in groups and fight against a different kind of group or monsters who have different but sometimes tangentially related powers to them), the chance that a fight will break out between two groups of people with powers is somewhere between 0.99 and 1
Wouldn’t any other tool work perfectly fine with it too, though? I mean, spectrals can touch things in the spectral world, so getting hit with a physical bat, or getting hit with a ghost bat… both are going to hurt a spectral.
It would have to be metal control as quarters are not effected by magnets. Also that would be the 25 cents that was stolen from him in the first fight.
The reality of it is kind of weird, let me explain. This info will unfold in the comic soonish but it’s magnet powers in the sense that he pulls metal to the bat at the moment. Max calls it magnet powers and so do I. There’s some jokes and stuff planned where others point out that it doesn’t work like a magnet. Spender and Isaac have some stuff to say about it in this chapter. So, I guess, the best way to explain it is like it’s a magnet that works like the way you’d expect a magnet to work if you didn’t know the science behind magnets? It follows “troll physics” sometimes. Metal control/pulling with a magnetic theme? I don’t know how you’d best describe it. It’s its own thing, I guess. The specifics will be made clear in the comic as things progress. You sort of have to see his spirit do some stuff to get like what its full extent is.
it kills we weekly how incredible this comic is
like damn zack this is the most badass thing i’ve read in a long time and the plot is amazing and the art is amazing and it’s clever as hell
and you’re doing it for??? free?????? and that is literally just the best thing
thank you so much for spending time and effort on this just so a bunch of internet dorks can read it x_x
Gonna have to second Puny here, this comic is def in my top three or four out of the ~200 webcomics I’ve read through, and of those is the funniest. How did you become such a good writer?
I call shinanighans
I was honestly hoping for the snake-whip bat
Your messing with my obnoxious fan based twist on your story man
Tsk tsk
Bad Zack, not making your story follow the imagination of someone not in the story at all
*upturns nose*
I am willing to think the whole “having a Scooter” affair was planned since the beginning just to allow this scene. Surely it is the work of a master plan.
So will Johnny be okay after this page? I mean, Max just grabbed the scooter after Johnny went really fast on it, so going at that speed plus the force of hitting the ground would probably kill him right?
Oh wait, it’s a comic. I’m not sure if logic applies here.
I’m almost certain Johnny’s face will get a magnificent dent in it, the likes of which have not been seen since.. a few panels ago. And yesterday, with a scooter.
Maybe there’s a reason for his behaviour! Frequent head trauma!
so his powers aren’t that useful against ghosts, on the other hand his tool is A BAT, you try to beat up a ghost with a book or a brush, a FREAKING METAL BAT is much more useful in beating up ghosts.
Besides maybe we will get to see a bros brawl style “base ball KO”!
Dammit, now everything makes sense… The flying over the fence was him zipping up to the lamppost, the super-fast running was him pulling himself towards the bus with his bat… Well played.
Does the bat spiritually “charge” objects it touches? Like could he stick a bunch of nails to the bat and then do more damage?
What if he repeatedly rubs the bat on something, like rubbing a magnet on a needle? Would the object become spiritually “magnetized” and then could interact with spirits?
What if he did that with glasses? Could those glasses become a visor to see spirits for non-spectrals?
Yeah, but isn’t that supposed to be Max’s tool spirit? In this chapter we found out that his tool is magnetic, but in the last chapter that spirit had frozen time. Or was that time snake a different spirit?
I think the time snake was a different spirit. he found his power in the morning, after the battle I think. the bat’s spectral is unknown, as far as I know
I’m still pretty sure the Time Snake is Max’s spirit. The fact that the spectral energy matched pretty much confirmed it, unless Zack used this as a red herring somehow. Then again, he did say that it was rarer for spirits to have black energy in the comments section of a previous chapter.
So I’m pretty confident said snake is still Max’s spirit. Maybe the magnetism is connected to time somehow? Maybe the ‘time-stopping’ effect is not an ability unique to said snake, and it happens whenever a spectral sees their spirit for the first time?
That, and Isaac said that Max must’ve had a tame first meeting with his spirit, meaning that encountering your spirit is a prerequisite for your powers to kick in. If Max’s spirit was something else, he would’ve seen it.
Alright, since I only get one chance at this… *clears throat* TOLD ALL OF YA’Ll! \(OoO)/
Seriously, Zack, thanks for including the foreshadowing, being an inspiration to storytellers everywhere on how to make a plot that rocks, and just being awesome in general. Oh, and also you guys who supported my theory. You’re cool, too. (‘u’)d
Please tell me equal and opposite forces are still at play. The pushing/pulling stuff from the Mistborn trilogy was awesome since it still had that hint of real physics. For example: if you tried to attract or repel an enormous metal object, you’d just launch yourself toward or away from it (same force acting on different masses).
They also exploited it to jump ridiculously high by just repelling a coin at their feet. Since the coin can’t push through the ground, it acts like a stationary object and sends them flying the opposite direction–upward.
Or are we going to say “screw Newton” to play it fast and loose?
I think we should go with the real physics. jumping high with just a coin sounds awesome. but there’s a problem: Max himself doesn’t have the power, so the superjump thing wouldn’t work. the pulling yourself towards something would work though
if you like that kind of magic, I suggest you look into the Kingkiller Chronicles. The first book, “The Name of the Wind” is fantastic and has some really sweet physics based magic that gets even better in the second book. Also, best webcomic ever. It breaks my heart that I have to wait a whole week between awesome pages. Keep up the good work and where can I donate so your awesomeness may continue and maybe become more frequent?
I am working on some wallpapers, one of which you can find on the Paranatural Facebook page, that I’m gonna let people donate for once I set up an Extras page. And there will be t-shirts in the new year, and a book after that, if everything goes according to plan! Also things are likely to get faster in the nearish future, probably two updates a week. Thanks a lot for the compliments and for reading!
Hey there, I’m a long time reader and first time commenter who just wanted to say I love ur comic!!!!!! Just wanted to say that…..
Plus I love your choice for max’s power. It’s useful in everyday situations yet can’t harm spirits….. The perfect way to piss max off and lead to some very funny moments to come.
Can’t wait to see issac’s power, and that pic u promised us a while back of max and issac showing off their powers
Keep up the good work man
Well, it’s definitely not the bat-like spirit he fought in the school, because the spirit didn’t even go into any tools. (as evidenced by Isabel’s “STOP BEING EVIL” panel.)
The time-eel-thing might have something to do with it, though.
So when all is said and done, Max is actually Magneto, but instead of a helmet he just has a hat and also a bat.
Also PJ is an X-men fan because he was talking about magnetic superpowers being “historically evil” because of Magneto! aaaahhh foreshadowing and full circle i love things all things mostly just this comic tho
Yessss!
magno-bat?
lol XD for a split-second, I misread that as “mango bat.”
I did as well
Same here.
Is his spectral smoke starting to change color?
No I don’t think so, the purple and flury of other colours in the 3rd pannel might just be a distortion of colours from the background.
Als the purple seems to be a universal “aura” of spectral energy. At least for the dark coloured ones.
For this page specifically it’s just like a way to show the connection with his spirit’s back but in the past I just did that because it looks cool. Or to provide contrast, like in chapter 2, where straight black energy wouldn’t be visible with the background.
I read that as blackground. I should really not read comments at 6 am.
after not sleeping.
So basically a “Purple shadow”.
Yeah, I noticed that too. It’s kind of reddish on panels 2 and 3.
PSBWBSBOSSBSB CAAAAAAALLLED EEET!!!!
Also! Superb job on the first pannel, you really fel his hand driving out to grab his bat.
“Boundary walls of rational behaviour” wait what. You mean that pile of rubble he left?
Now the ultimate question, can he use the bat to fly on by reversing the em field from the Earths.
I’m not Zack, but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say yes. But Max has to ride it like a witch’s broomstick while doing so. Alternately, he could always do what Thor does, but I don’t think his body is tough enough to survive re-entry.
Or he could grab some duct-tape and surf the sucker!
No, of course not.
It it was reverse from the earth, it’d just get stuck to the ground. Opposites attract ;)
So everyone’s speculation is confirmed.
That is an awesome superpower
…
Starchman Stars are worth $500?
$498.25
No, $500. 1 – .5 + x + .25 = 500.75 x = 500
I do A-Level Maths, I can definitely work it out to be $500 :P
…
USERNAME UPGRADE because I actually have a Gravatar when I append an 82 to my username :3
OKAY APPARENTLY NOT NEVERMIND
.. where did the gravatar go anyway.
that’s based on email, not name.
You have to put your Gravatar email in when you’re commenting, bro!:D
Ah, that explains a lot actually. Thanks.
Stealing change from Johnny… his first step into villainy.
Or maybe not, it was probably justified anyway. Probably some poor kid’s pocket change. *shrug*
Maybe Max will end up becoming some bad-ass antihero instead. Like, you know, Wolverine, except without a driver’s license or a Canadian accent.
Or sideburns
Wasn’t he beating up rich kids who “spit change” before he messed with Max?
So it’s just some rich kid’s money. Not that bad.
Aw hell yes.
Worth the wait.
Indeed
Concur’d
Agreed
Yes! The superpowers have finally been revealed! :DDDDD
Johnny’s face…it is the best face. That is, until the next page of the comic comes out.
Of COURSE! He’s got to keep up with hisself. Raise da bar. y’knowuti’msayin?
G0vah do ya have to keep taking the good johnny faces before I do? Ya copy cat. I was using him as my avatar before it was cool. XD
B)
It’s a race!
.. Basically log on at midnight Friday and nab the avatar before anyone else does. Then brag about it in the comments.
You’re on!
no, based on your avatar, it’s more like O_O
So…Max’s superpower…is MIRACLES!
Hah! Max pulled Johnny’s spare change out of his pocket too. Who’s the superior playground bully now Johnny?
judging by the way Max is getting smaller quickly Johnny has an awful lot of momentum in him now :-) that should take a few panels to break, right?!
I’m fairly certain Johnny will be landing in that lake at the bottom of the hill…
being certain about it is one thing, having it awsomly illustrated is… high on my whish list…
(see previous page for aforementioned lake)
yes, yes, my imagination is all set up and waiting for the colorful illustrations
now we know
So, Max got 25 cents back?
Wasn’t it 50 cents?
MAGNETS, HOW DO THEY WORK?
FREAKING MIRACLES!!
I don’t think it’s the bat that’s magnetic, but Max’s personality.
Faculty confirmed for bribable for 25 cents.
At this rate he could probably buy his way out of the entire school year.
But Johnny won’t. Because he DEEPLY VALUES HIS EDUCATION.
Max on the other hand… Johnny will be able to do nothing but slowly shake his head at the poor, poor, fool.
anyone notice Max’s spectral energy reaching out to the bat? little details is what makes this web comic awesome
I LOVE how you give enough clues for people to guess the powers. Someone stated earlier that Suzy’s phone clung to the bat! and LOOK Magnet powers!
Yes I like to do those little clues. In the first page of the chapter all of the metal zippers are pointing towards the bat, for instance.
Oh goodness, I hadn’t noticed that at all! And now, looking back, it’s so obvious. Bravo.
You, Mr. Morrison, deserve a Starchman Star!
Concured
You. Are. Amazing. Why aren’t all webcomic writers so clever?
because not all webcomic writers are Zack Morrison
;)
Concur’d

I understand Isabel’s paper and Ed’s pant affecting spirits/ghosts since they originate from their respective tools, but Max’s control metal in the enviroment, things that normally should just go through spirits/ghosts.
Haha, yeah. There are some jokes about this coming up. Normal metal objects pass right through ghosts and spirits, yes. Max will have to manage.
And.. now that we think about that, Max’s tool seems rather difficult to use, compared to the others. Guess he’ll just have to be smart about it.
On the bright side, it’s a perfect anti-spectral tool.
Oh… now I’m thinking about situations where the spectral kids would have to fight each other! Not entirely sure how that would come about, but given what happens to most series like this, it’s a distinct possibility.

I guess when I said ‘distinct possibility’ I mean it’s basically gonna happen. :D
Wouldn’t any other tool work perfectly fine with it too, though? I mean, spectrals can touch things in the spectral world, so getting hit with a physical bat, or getting hit with a ghost bat… both are going to hurt a spectral.
Yeah, we saw this happen with the can in the shop already.
It would have to be metal control as quarters are not effected by magnets. Also that would be the 25 cents that was stolen from him in the first fight.
Canadian quarters are affected by magnets.
Wait, Mayview is in Canada? Max is becoming more like Wolverine already!
I’m siding with the metal control camp. That scooter should be aluminum.
It’s magnet powers. Sort of.
Magneto works the same way. He has magnet power and then he can control metal because stuff non ferromagnetic metals.
Metal elemental powers?
Sounds to me more like it works like magnetism works conceptually, not physically. Which is pretty fair, given how much spirits & metaphor work.
Yes, that’s a good way to describe it.
great page
MAXNETO??? And… Brotherhood of Insolent Children?!
I would read the heck out of that.
I freaking love this web comic. <3 Bravo!
:D
it kills we weekly how incredible this comic is
like damn zack this is the most badass thing i’ve read in a long time and the plot is amazing and the art is amazing and it’s clever as hell
and you’re doing it for??? free?????? and that is literally just the best thing
thank you so much for spending time and effort on this just so a bunch of internet dorks can read it x_x
Haha, no problem. Thanks for reading.
I have to say out of a long lis of comics i read, yours is the best AND funniest!
Gonna have to second Puny here, this comic is def in my top three or four out of the ~200 webcomics I’ve read through, and of those is the funniest. How did you become such a good writer?
.. Top three or four? You know of a comic better than Paranatural? Wow.
this page is nothing short of amazing?? hwow
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!! Im laughing my head off right now! Max is all like “YOINK!” while Johnny is like “What the?!” LOL!!!
MAGNET BAT IS THE NEW TIME SNAKE!
Zack you are the best at comic making ever.
I call shinanighans
I was honestly hoping for the snake-whip bat
Your messing with my obnoxious fan based twist on your story man
Tsk tsk
Bad Zack, not making your story follow the imagination of someone not in the story at all
*upturns nose*
Can’t we have both?
Actually, now that I think about it, “tools tend to look like their spirit as they recover”, so we could end up getting both.
OK now I feel better
I’m happy again xD
*shot*
I am willing to think the whole “having a Scooter” affair was planned since the beginning just to allow this scene. Surely it is the work of a master plan.
The ENTIRE COMIC was planned from the start. Zack’s already said that plenty of times.
In order to have head trauma, doesn’t he have to have a brain in the first place?
Johnny’s got “grit’n grace”, so he’ll just cartwheel the rest of the way down.
A doctopi’ll probably be somewhere to cure him. Just like before. Maybe.
Oh man, if Johnny doesn’t stick his dismount, he is so not going to the finals.
Eh, Max is already going home with the Gold. And the silver. And the bronze. And the Magnesium. And the Thorium.
What about the the Beryllium?
So. Magnetism? Or Metal control? Judging by “TO THE SKIES” earlier, Imma go with Magnetism.
Which grants Max one of the single most bullshit powers of all time. Magneto is a really nice guy when you consider he doesn’t just switch people off.
Yet does not help much against ghosts.
Nope it’s metal controll
So he’s the next Magneto? ;p
Well, that’s why the power is an “evil” power: comic book villains! I love this comic so much right now…
Oh Johnny.
75 comments and not a single magnet pun? Alright, fine. I’ll start: it looks like Max has a *puts on sunglasses* magnetic personality.
Its no wonder why Suzy’s so…attracted to him.
I don’t know. He seems a bit … bipolar.
Puns are bad and you should feel bad.
Try not to be so…negative. ;)
I wouldn’t have said anything if I’d have known it’d make you feel so…charged.
well, now we know why he has a….positive outlook on life
so his powers aren’t that useful against ghosts, on the other hand his tool is A BAT, you try to beat up a ghost with a book or a brush, a FREAKING METAL BAT is much more useful in beating up ghosts.
Besides maybe we will get to see a bros brawl style “base ball KO”!
Hey, I got a new e-mail. How to I switch the e-mail I use to comment?
If you log out there should be an opportunity for you to re-enter it, I think. Lemme know if that doesn’t work.
…how do you log out?
Dammit, now everything makes sense… The flying over the fence was him zipping up to the lamppost, the super-fast running was him pulling himself towards the bus with his bat… Well played.
Also, when he’s told “that’s an evil superpower…” Gahhhh, more realizations just keep coming, and I’m going to be late for work because of them.
No to all 3. Metal objects attracted by the bat not touching spirits is something that Max has to deal with.
Well, having a bunch of nails stuck to the bat would PROBABLY do more damage…
… to things that are actually in the physical world.
This is one of the best webcomics I’ve ever read. The plot line is cool, the idea is original, it’s very humorous, and THE FACES. THE! FACES!
Thanks!
WOOOOOOOOOO! IT’S CONFIRMED.
It only took like 12 weeks but it’s confirmed that he has a magnetic bat.
I’m gonna celebrate! :P
Hey Zack, if I may ask, how did you come upon to making a website like this?
Woot, the mystery is revealed! But wait…… Then what about when time stopped when he saw his snake spirit? SO CONFUSED.
the time snake simply froze time exept for max, then just unfroze it.
BLACK spectral energy? That’s…
… fairly common. So I doubt that having the same spectral energy colour would confirm the spirit belongs to the bat.
touche’
Alright, since I only get one chance at this… *clears throat* TOLD ALL OF YA’Ll! \(OoO)/
Seriously, Zack, thanks for including the foreshadowing, being an inspiration to storytellers everywhere on how to make a plot that rocks, and just being awesome in general. Oh, and also you guys who supported my theory. You’re cool, too. (‘u’)d
Haha, I’m picturing an awards show acceptance speech here.
Magnetism!
…
Magnets, how do they work?
Where’s the Starchman Star, man? You don’t joke around Starchman Stars! They’re worth somethiiiiiiing!
I just gotta say this: I’m loving Johnny’s expressions. They’re perfect for gravytars. :P
So, the spirit/ghost/whatever that inhabits the bat has a magnetic personality?
Maybe it was a very attractive female spirit? :P
Yeah, using the power on a school bus would pull Max to it, for example. Equal and opposite forces are still in play.
Max already used it to pull himself toward the lamppost.
if you like that kind of magic, I suggest you look into the Kingkiller Chronicles.

And there will be t-shirts in the new year, and a book after that, if everything goes according to plan! Also things are likely to get faster in the nearish future, probably two updates a week. Thanks a lot for the compliments and for reading!
My bowels cannot contain my excitement, I must show it to the world!
I’d rather you not show anything you got from your bowels…
Haha
I laughed so hard like an mindless idiot in my room when I read this comment… Thanks for that!
now we know what everyone’s spectral energy color is :D
You mean I still have to wait to give you my money?!
Out of curiosity is the yellow shading on the bat significant? Probably not but all the good questions have been taken…
I think it’s just a way of indicating what’s being magnetized.
Keep up the good work man
“yet can’t harm spirits”
What if the spirit is magnetic
or weak to bats
In my experience everything is weak to bats
Wow, fantastic job on the movement here. I always admire your ability to make things flow! Great art!
Oh man if only this could be animated.
That is either not a real quarter, a Canadian quarter, or Max’s power are not magnetism.
I know its a silly question, but the max’s spirit its the bat he fought on the school? or perhaps the time-frozen eel on his house?
To be revealed and explained by the end of the chapter
Well, it’s definitely not the bat-like spirit he fought in the school, because the spirit didn’t even go into any tools. (as evidenced by Isabel’s “STOP BEING EVIL” panel.)
The time-eel-thing might have something to do with it, though.
Whooaah! Zack got a new avatar!
Do you draw them yourself, or do other people just have a weird obsession with re-creating your face?
How about metal fists?
Despite the epicness of Johny I still want to seeh im getting his shit beaten up by MAx.
Like.
So bad.
Isn’t the new comic suposed to be today?
Or did i mix something up?
So when all is said and done, Max is actually Magneto, but instead of a helmet he just has a hat and also a bat.
Also PJ is an X-men fan because he was talking about magnetic superpowers being “historically evil” because of Magneto! aaaahhh foreshadowing and full circle i love things all things mostly just this comic tho
Max is also technically “Batman” because of the bat, PJ is Robin due to a past Alt-text, and the spinx-spirit is the Riddler.
Must be a Canadian coin… US coins aren’t magnetic.
