H-How is that possible?!
It’s Zack. Enough said.
This whole page made me laugh aloud
And Isaac looks really cool with glowy eyes
Whereas Max’s eyes scared the living plank out of me.
Glowy-eyed people seem to be a trend in this comic…
What’s with Mr. Spender and the backpack? Can someone explain.
Probably for distance between max and his spirit, so that the spirit doesn’t hear about how it can eat max’s head For Reals?
So I guess that would be why he doesn’t tell Isaac anything? You probably can’t just whack Isaac’s spirit out of his head for a second.
HOLY SHIT THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
And yet, Mr. Spender gets to have the additional fun of being a jerkoverlord to Isaac. And this is probably why he’s encouraging Isaac to figure things out on his own.
Didn’t want Max’s spirit to overhear.
Thanks for the clarifications :D
Yeah what these people said. Will be confirmed explicitly in the comic in a bit.
But still. He just gave that idea to whatever’s possessing max.
Well, I’m scared forever
Man why is everybody jacking Max’s stuff today? First Johnny and now Spenderman?
Also did anyone else notice in Panel 2 Isaac apparently has a Mr.Starchman Plushie?
Li’l Starchy’s been there for the last few comics, basically since they entered the classroom.
Voodoo? Is it voodoo?? VOODOO!*
*bonus points for anyone who can name the reference.
R2D2 where ARE you?!
Oh wait… Dittoed the guy two comments down… Shiiiit…
Remind me of a man.
Remind me of the babe.
You remind me of the babe.
It’s more obscure than that. It’s a flash cartoon.
Connors, I do believe you are referencing a group of girls between the ages of 13 and 19. A squad of them even. Some sort of… Teen Girl Squad. But only a really unattractive sort of girl would suggest voodoo. An ugly one, even!
WHAT’S HER FACE
AND THE UGLY OOOOOONE!
Is that one of the things you get for Starchman Stars?p
well if you go back to his first page, a plushy of him does appear to be in the box of prizes. http://paranatural.net/chapter-1-page-44/
Wow this is a good comic. I really want to draw fan art but I’m afraid it would be too forward of me…
I love fan art!
Shit, he knows
Does this mean Max’s spirit wants to bite his head off because aside from the free meal that course of action seems counterproductive.
Mr. Lender really should give better examples or at least clarify that the spirit would have no reason to kill Max.
So you have to keep your spirit (and emotions) in check,or else it’ll A. Kill you or B. Take you over? Kind of like Ichigo’s Hollow mode?
What Mr. Spencer must not know is that slapping a bookbag is liking being denied a shot in Basketball.
How do you mean?
Zack is lying, the squiggles do mean something! 4chan, get to work!
On it, Boss!
TO THE INTERNET! Wait. im on it…
The world is an amazing place.
Gotta love McGee.
So Mr. Spasm hit the backpack (and tool) away so Scrapdragon isn’t overhearing info?
That 5th Panel is amazing. I shall use it for my avatar.
darn, i was thought i was fast enough today to get the best face
Also, why would they be worried about Scrapdragon eating Max’s head? Wouldn’t killing its host be bad for it?
Well not all spirits are logical, and a spirit might not like the host after getting to know them a little.
Plus, killing its host might be a quick way for it to release itself without having to accumulate tons of energy. It may still be weak when it leaves, but not necessarily close to fading away entirely. And even if it were about to ‘die’ again, it’d probably just inhabit another tool/person and take its chances with the new spectral.
I think killing the host just means it is now inhabiting a corpse. And nobody sane wants to wield a corpse as a tool. They tend to smell the place up. And your life turns into a reenactment of ‘Weekend at Bernie’s', except with more superpowers.
Considering the way Scrapdragon ATE the the other monster, I’d think that having a living host is more helpful than a dead host or an innert tool, since the host hunts down your food for you. On the other hand, the monster WAS pretty offended at the entire concept …
Okay wait, I missed the part with Scrapdragon eating somebody else.
When did this happen? Maybe I didn’t read chapter 2 thoroughly enough, I know Max batted the bat in the first chapter, but in second chapter Racist Whrog got taken out by Ed’s paintscythe to the head.
It didn’t, looking back I mistook it breathing out black vapors for it sucking something in
This doesn’t seem to be the case considering that, with the information revealed in this comic, Max’s spirit very likely and deliberately saved his life against the Racist Whale Frog when said whale frog came .02 seconds from smashing Max’s head into the glass door.
Max’s spirit wanting Max dead that is. I agree with Mary in that down the road, Max’s spirit could grow discontent with him and off him.
Also the spirit in the bat may have engineered their pairing. I believe that was in chapter one.
It almost certainly coaxed Max into finding the bat.
Chapter 1, page 39. Max wanted to open the closet for no reason at all.
Page 55-58, he decides the best course of action to bust a door open is a baseball bat.
Page 66. Splender tells Max that the bat engineered the encounter and jump-started Max’s development as a spectral.
Also at some point in this comment section, someone mentioned that the bat’s spirit can’t hear through the bat. Yet, Lefty can see without even having eyes.
I’m also waiting to see Max’s mom. Speaking of his parents…
What did the frog thing mean on chapter 2 page 27 when it was looking at his dad? Was it going to possess him? Max’s dad… a medium? I think the whole town would die from some kind of mental trauma if there were a bunch of Max’s dads running around town.
Wait a second. “You heard him”? So it’s confirmed: spirits within spectrals can hear what other people are saying! At least, it’s confirmed for mediums (media?), but Mr. Sprinter whacking away Max’s backpack seems to imply that the same goes for tool-wielders as well.
Also, Max in the second-to-last panel looks like P.J.! XD
Baseball bats don’t have ears. Spirits can only hear and see through their host’s ears and eyes. Mediums obviously are always in contact, but a tool-user’s connection is maintained through physical contact.
Also Isaac is resting his head by holding up his hair.
Speculating: if you move super fast in visions, could you use that in combat?
And would other spectrals communing with their spirits appear to be moving at normal speed?
We don’t know that’s how it works. Having spirits being able to hear from the tools they possess isn’t that far-fetched. What other reason is there for Spender to smack the backpack away mid-speech? Potentially, he could be setting up for something cool to happen with Max and/or his tool, but this seems more likely right now.
Your last question is pretty interesting. Dunno how that would work, but because the communication is a “user-specific” reality, I feel like the answer is no. But hey, who knows?
SO, max goes into hyper speed AND flys by riding on a giant magnetic eel and destroys his foes?
That’d just be unfair to his opponent. o_O
I think, given his actions, that Mr. Spittoon is either…
A) unaware that the thing is powerful or
B) that snapdragon can switch between “bat” and “Max” or
C) Snapdragon really isn’t powerful enough to overhear, but something ELSE (the “broken ‘god’”) is.
We don’t know the mechanics of Scrapdragon’s bodyjacking yet. Given what we know now, I’d say that I expect the broken god and Scrapdragon to be one and the same- especially since we now know the glowing eyes bit just comes from being in contact with your spirit. Max had the backpack on at the time he got bodyjacked earlier- Mr. Spender doesn’t ask for the bat, but the entire backpack, and then hits it across the room. It’s most likely at this point that Scrapdragon is anchored in the bat, and can control Max from there. Later plot twists might contradict this, but at this point, I’d say think horses not zebras.
It does raise the question of why Mr. Spender deemed this particular tidbit unsafe for Scrapdragon’s ear slits. Is he normally just cagy when it comes to talking where spirits can hear (which might explain why he’s so evasive towards Isaac, but doesn’t explain why he’s basically encouraging Isaac to come up with answers that he may or may not be supposed to give him) or does he have a reason to be suspicious of Scrapdragon in particular?
His last comment, about “you should definitely be worried about getting your head bitten off” could just be Zack’s usual proclivity to witty dialogue, but it also seems somewhat ominous. Appropriately so, given they’re discussing the fact that you could potentially get attacked and mutilated by something that is invisible and untouchable by anyone else in the room.
If Mr. Spender is in fact oracular, as his comment about dreams suggests, has he had a vision about Scrapdragon? We know he’s got a lot more going on than we see right now, and outside of a few comedic breaks that so far seem limited to the first chapter, it is DANG hard to read his expressions sometimes.
Given his comment about clearance, I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason why he’s such an evasive, uninformative mentor is because he’s not supposed to tell the kids much- and thus can only really expound on it when, as Isaac said, it’s extremely necessary for the kids to know, but he WANTS them to know more, and is encouraging Isaac (who probably bothers him the most about this kind of thing) to use other resources/think outside of the box by asking questions Spender CAN answer and then putting two and two together to get four.
Whoops, there I go again :/
But it’s a very interesting wall of text. I like the idea that maybe Mr. Spender wants them to try to find out more.
Ooh, concur’d. If that’s the case, then Isaac really should know better than to blame Mr. Splendid, considering he’s seen Mr. Walker and the “mooks.”
I find this to be a fascinating idea as well.
As Galactina put it: concur’d!
I suspect that Mr. Spelunker is so cagey because while the spirits may be able to use their spectral partner’s senses, they are not able to read their minds. Therefore, if Isaac can figure things out on his own, Montezeusma won’t have that information, whereas if Mr. Spinnerette just tells Isaac, then Monty knows, too.
Funny how 4chan is trying to make sense of your scribbles, thinking you’re trying to fool them Zack… are you?
well, spirit language was a thing.
so why not?
It’s totally hieroglyphics!
Or the profile of some New Mexico rock formations…
Uh, where buried treasure is located.
Or maybe its a form of shorthand…
It could also just be scribbles. Just saying.
I wonder how it looks like in Isabel’s, Ed’s, Isaac’s and Mr. Spattypatties spirit realm. WHOOO MYSTERIOUS
Do I spy a reference to page 4030 of a certain other comic, hmm?
I’m an idiot who just got two completely different webcomics mixed up.
It seems people are genuinely distressed over /any/ kind of dead dragon, recently deceased or otherwise.
Mixing up webcomics? Is there anything worse? My patience has been stretched miles beyond its threshold.
Your avatar makes this hilarious!
rafe is talking about this http://mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=004030
it certainly looks familiar
You say it’s random squiggles, but you haven’t exactly built up a lot of trust on that front
/co/’s thinking it says “4chan will be pissed as it should be.”
I should make a Mr. Starchman plush.
I can make a scrapdragon balloon animal
What a fantastic way to explain everything! And what a fantastic page as usual. Nicely done, Zack! :)
Uh. Was that a stab at Madoka, or I missed something?
But the last time 4chan translated some squiggles was for Madoka’s runes… afaik…
Dammit, now I’m tempted to call Max’s spirit “Charlotte” from now on.
I’m sort of curious what Isaac’s conversation with his spirit was just now. That was an awful lot of gesticulation for “hey I need to go into a vision to show a guy what it’s like” and the way he threw up his arm in one panel… spirit is possibly ticked at Isaac? It’s hard to say, given we have no idea what Isaac’s spirit is like, aside from being a cloud-headed big claw thing.
Perhaps we’ll see
Spirit: “You have failed me for the last time!”
Isaac: “Please don’t eat me! I just need a little more time! I still have one more idea to get Mr. Spender to talk.”
I SAID THAT AND THEN THE NEXT PAGE HAPPENED.
WHAT EVEN, AND I MEAN THAT IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY.
So that’s what the scrapdragon looks like when not drawn in profile! I’ve been wondering about that.
Max, keep cool and keep your head on straight. (Literally and Figuratively)
Good advice. Mr. Spearmint would approve.
Spearmint? I prefer Wintergreen…
No, no. We’re talking about Mr. Stigma
Oh, Mr. Spaceman! Gotcha.
Well, as long the spirit is really in the backpack…..
I think that the last 7 panels are to be read in the following order:
And Mr. Splortch is just showing off how fast his body and brain are when he enters the vision state by knocking the backpack out of Max’s hands faster than an image can capture.
(I mean, could you knock a full backpack across the room with a slap of your fingertips in real time?)
is its own panel… well, what I meant was that the one where Mr. Spelunk unroots the backpack comes directly after the one where Max says “Uh, sure.”
why did it have to be snakes.
Zack, if you no don’t make that Starchman plushie in panel two, I will stop loving your crazy story and destroy the world
Why must Mr. Skinner give the most unnerving example possible?
“BECAUSE COMIC RELEIF THAT’S WHY.”
“Mr. Spender stop breaking the fourth wall already!”
its not necessarily breaking the fourth wall
when you are employin child soldiers who happen to have superpowers its a good idea to keep them entertained otherwise they could very easily go rogue in a fit of adolescent capriciousness
of course its better not to give the guns to the insolent children but if theyre gonna have guns anyways you should probably keep them as happy as you can manage
I don’t think Max or anyone else in the PAC should worry about Scrapdragon (is that its official name now?) biting Max’s head off… I’d say Scrapdragon can find Max to be very very useful. What with taking over and everything.
Also, something tells me that throwing the backpack all the way through the room won’t do much against the spirit hearing the conversation.
What if that means the bat doesn’t have Max’s ears for now?
I just want to hear more about this world, keep up the great work there zack
…I lost it at the flailing arms and genuine distress. xDDD
Been reading Homestuck, have you, Zack?
It’s a good comic, I wouldn’t be surprised.
I Noticed Isaac hand motions and gestures and faces he does in panel 5, looks like in the minute conversation he had with his spirit it tried to hurt him. Now he ends the little chat in “should be.” (period) now the last line I’m speculating it may have ended in “it should be” but what? it should be what? exactly, that or his spirit was just messing with him.
“…there’s no need to do this harder than it should be”?
OH SHEET!! THAT BE PERFECT
that’s what she said
Huh, I thought we (sort of, not really I guess) confirmed that Max is possessed… so doesn’t that mean that Max’s spirit can still hear what Mr. Spender is saying?
I think that the whole “Glowy-eyed Max thing” was just to show the giant amount of influence the thing in the bat has over Max already. As in “Yeah, it’s in the bat, but it’s POWERFUL.” So Mr. Splashboard isn’t actually risking being overheard.
OR (less likely, but kinda neat story-wise) Max has two supernatural entities: one in the bat and one in him, with the snake-thing being in the bat and something far worse being in him.
Mr. Splashboard, Esq.
What a great surname. Writing that down.
That’d be interesting, but now that you mention it, I think this page pretty much confirms that there’s only one spirit and it’s just CRAZY. That’d be why Mr. Spender just sent Max’s backpack flying before telling him what his spirit could do to him. I think? Maybe? Unless I’m missing something obvious. Which happens a lot.
Unless Mr. Spraypaint wasn’t aware of the evil entity inhabiting Max, and only aware of the one inhabiting the bat?
Possible… though to some extent it seems needlessly complicated.
Don’t get me wrong, if Max is legit rockin’ the DOUBLE-DOWN GHOST BONANZA™, that’d be awesome.
I think only when he’s in contact with his bat, that’s why Spender knocked it away.
It’s still unconfirmed if Scrapdragon can indeed use both kinds of possession (tool & medium) interchangeably or at the same time (which would be my theory, and I suppose that other people’s too); and all signs right now point at Scrapdragon being in the bat… So who knows?
While uncomfirmed, I have a hunch that the Scrapdragon is Max’s only Spirit and it can’t just jump the fence from tool to body and back again. Remember, Spirits in mediums recover faster than Spirits in tools. I’d say it be more advantagious (did I spell that right) if the spirit could jump bodies just to stay in Max, thus making the bat worthless and unable to hit ghost/spirits which he has done after he got the bat in multiple occasions.
Your theory is possible, but my gut and some other things make me think that it is highly unlikely and this is just standard fair for tools.
Then again, maybe there are advantages to Scrapdragon being mainly a tool spirit. Perhaps there’s a certain amount of stealth and low-profile to be a tool?
The story suggests a bunch of factions with frictions, which a god in fractions would likely be involved in. In those cases, keeping a low profile can be a rather fructuous thing to do- Okay, okay, I’ll drop the tongue-twister.
Or maybe it’s both, he is called a “broken god” after all, maybe when he was defeted he split, and part of him possesed Max, and another part possesed the bat, and maybe their are more out their as well.
This could be a fun idea. Would it mean that Scrapdragon’s pieced-back-together form would be something akin to Yamata-no-Orochi?
Well yeah, the parallel would depend on the number of heads… Trisiras for 3, Orochi for 8, Hydra for 9… Ladon for 100.
Eh bien, M. Échardes a une façon unique d’enseigner des choses.
“Max, fun fact: your spirit can bite your head off.”
Protip: Always be more valuable than a snack to your spirit.
Ha ha ha! Oui, c’est à peu près tout. J’aime particulièrement les “morceaux Max en route vers l’estomac” partie. C’était drôle. XD
I love how only Max seems to notice how overthetop and ridiculous everything is, up to and including the poses people are striking haha. The panel with Mr. Spender knocking away his bag made me giggle a little.
Hmm, seems like I’m not the only one concerned that it looks like Isaac’s defending himself. I can see why it would be a bad idea for Scrapdragon to bite off Max’s head, but two years is a long time. Maybe Isaac’s spirit doesn’t have to be so careful about keeping its medium intact?
I dunnoooo, I just like speculating. (Am I doing this Gravatar thing right?)
Yes, yes you are. Doing the Gravatar thing right, that is. Welcome to the club! :)
Ooh I really like this page for some reason..it’s funny, but fairly..dire at the same time. Ugh I love this. So happy with the new update schedule.
Scared Max looks like PJ.
It seems there are SOME things that Mr. Spindrift is comfortable discussing in front of Isaac, but not in front of Max’s bat? Odd.
Well he did throw it across the room before saying it. Plus, who says Isaac’s spirit doesn’t already know it can kill Isaac for real anytime he wants?
if isaac dies, the spirit is released without all of its energy.
if max dies, his spirit can just sit there in the bat and wait for another black-energied spectral.
plus they’ve had more time with isaac’s spirit, so they’re probably more comfortable with it.
Let me try something. FOR SCIENCE!!!!
So that’s how it works…
I now know how to put in a youtube clip, to bad it cost a McDonalds…
Losing your head is bad and all, but Mr. Spender forgot to tell Max about the Twinkie.
OMG, but now i’m sad that you can’t buy Twinkies anymore.
Hostess has been bought and Twinkies will be made again.
You can always get a knock off brand.
The Scrapdragon looks almost puppy-ish on this page. :D
D’awww! You’re right! :D
Oh. Max’s spirit
Wait, this means that spirits in tools can essentially intimidate favours out of their spectral hosts, doesn’t it? Snakey hypnotized Max into going toward the tool before, can induce this communion state when he has the tool, and can use that to threaten his life. And possessed spectrals wouldn’t even need to be drawn toward a tool for this, it could just happen any time. Scary.
Well I mean, the spirit kind of needs their energy, it seems like a risky idea to kill their host.
The connection might go both ways. I mean it might be possible to hurt your own tool/medium spirit i that state as well, and Mr. Spender knocked away Max’s backpack so that his tool doesn’t hear and take advantage of Max before he is able to defend himself.
That’s an interesting point… but I wonder. To do so, the spectral would need to have a greater control over their spirit’s powers than the spirit did themselves, since the spirit is the source of the spectral’s offensive abilities, right?
So Isaac has Eggman’s doll? Guess he got it for stars
You mean Starchman.
i have a question, how come mr. srcapdragon can just take over? it’s almost as if mr.scrapdragon has all the control over max.
i mean doesn’t max have to ask like issac did? or no?
i confuzzled :/
I don’t think asking is -required-. My guess is the spirits can take over whenever they please, if they see the need. I could guess the willingness of the host is also a factor, but only if the host can realize what’s going on (a few pages earlier, Scrapdragon had a small conversation with Doorman and Max seemed not to notice in the least…?).
I’ve been under the guess that Scrapdragon is in the bat, and something WORSE is in Max, with no one (not even Mr. Spender) aware of the full situation except for the big bad evil entity. Of course, I could be wrong completely. The reason I think there’s 2 is…
1) It makes the big bad one seem like more of a threat, and
2) “Max” was talking normal-speed to the doorman.
I don’t think Scrap’s talk with the Doorman was a similar event as Isaac’s example of heightened perception. Max wasn’t communing with Scrapdragon, Scrapdragon took over Max’s body and Max didn’t notice anything had happened.
I’m not much of an advocate of the edition of other people’s comics, but for the purpose of my explanation, here’s how I suppose that scene played out from Max’s POV:
I’m sorry if I’m stepping out of line or something?
“GENUINE DISTRESS”… smells like…. homestuck…..
You’re late to the party, man.
AHAHAHA, THE CALL-OUT
Best hovertext yet
Quick, completely arbitrary question, Zack:
You mentioned that this comic would do a time skip eventually. Will we ever get to see a snowy Mayview? I just personally think that would look PRETTY. :D
I also believe that this would be pretty.
Hell yes, I love snow! Snowy Mayview please :D
I have achieved the Avatar State!
I feel kind of dumb but, can someone send me a picture of Scrapdragon?
A couple of pages ago, when Max chased Johnny into the woods, Mr. Garcia floated by when Max jumped a creek: http://paranatural.net/chapter-3-page-27/
Now, I’m wondering if that was just small twist to make Mayview seem even weirder (in previous pages we have seen that Mr. Garcia liked his sleep so he could have just fallen asleep mid-stride on his way to school and somehow ended up in his) or if this was a classic use of foreshadowing on Zack’s part. I haven’t really read the comments on that page yet….
I have a question, so remember the butterfly Ghost? If ghosts Get powers what power does PJ have? Being Creepy?
Zack’s mentioned before that PJ doesn’t really have any powers, per se. Just the usual ghost abilities and weaknesses.
So how will Max and his spirit’s conversations go, I wonder? Or if the spirit will just be (brown) reclusive and give him the cold shoulder and use him for his own benefit?
Spirit: Hey. Hey Max.
Max: What now?!
S: Hey, Max, I got an idea.
S: Hit Mr. Spender. In the face. With the bat.
M: That’s stupid. No way.
S: I don’t like him. Do it or I’ll make you.
M: Make me-oh, you’re quick, you slinky turd nugget.
S: Oh come on. Just do it.
You could say you were just practicing your parker.
M: IT’S PARKOUR.
S: That’s right, and you’ll look SO COOL.
M: …Dangit, you’re right.
S: Yes, yes I am.
This. This floored me!
“You could say you were just practicing your parker.
M: IT’S PARKOUR.
S: That’s right, and you’ll look SO COOL.
M: …Dangit, you’re right.
S: Yes, yes I am.” XD
isaac is just so cute asfasgasdgsd.
Loving the reporter girl(I think her name was Cindy?)’s attitude towards everything.
Especially in Chapter 3, Page 18.
I remembered it after I posted it.
Random revelations recently.
So why was it that when max was possessed earlier and talking to doorman, that he said” I did not get the sense of humor?”
Why this specific wording? Why refer to a specific one with doorman? It sound like it is in reference to an event they both know, what would that be? Did the spirit split from something?
Is there an Anti-ScrapDragon?
It was “I’d laugh, but I didn’t end up with the sense of humor”
He might not be possessed, I think he was just trying to act badass. Pretending to be something he’s not to somebody nervous.
I’d laugh – at your request for secrecy.
Like all good stories, we’ll find out if it does mean anything. Zack doesn’t seem to be one for major hanging threads. So far details that have seemed meaningless aren’t.
Tune in Monday for the next Zack-Tacular Episode of Paranatural!!
Heh, i just had to come back and mention how much I love the spaz attack.
I….guess that makes sense. What’s next? Do they have to call out the name of their spirit to become stronger? (Guess what reference THAT is.
That Ability would make a great advantage in fights
did anyone else notice the starchman doll on the couch? why would a school make dolls that look like a teacher at said school?
